How do you actually play WoE? #1

We've already given you a brief idea of what WoE is. But how does it actually work? What are the core game mechanics? How do I have to imagine it?

We will answer these questions in the next weeks with regular articles. Soon a first version of the rulebook will also be available for download on the homepage.

But let's get started: As mentioned before, WoE is a tactical card game combining classic deckbuilding action with the strategic possibilities of a board game / game board. Before you start a game, you choose your deck. Each of the 6 spheres has a pre-made deck of 30 cards in the basic game set. There are also additional cards for each sphere, so you can later customize your decks to your liking. Once you have decided on a sphere, you will need to choose your warlord. There are 3 different warlords available for each color, allowing for different tactics and also giving you an additional player skill. With the warlords and the additional cards, you can build a deck combo that perfectly fits your play style. Learn more about the decks and the Warlords in our new Decks Spotlight soon!

In Standard game mode, your goal is to defeat the enemy warlord. At the start of your game, the warlords are already on the board and sitting on their respective command posts. They remain tied to this until turn ten. From turn ten on, they can move freely across the board like units. But more about that soon!

So you've chosen your deck and your warlord, who is now on the command post waiting for his turn. Each player now draws 6 hand cards. Dice are rolled to determine who starts. The cards have an essence cost number in the top right corner. To play this card, you must spend the corresponding amount of essences. You will always have essences available depending on the current round. So in round 1 you have one essence. In round 2, you have access to two essences. In round 3 you will have three essences and so on. Up to a maximum of 10 essences. At the beginning of your turn, your essences are always set to the current maximum. (So at the beginning of your 5th turn, you have five essences available to play cards from your hand). In addition to playing cards and activating the abilities of played cards, you can use player skills to intervene directly in the action on the field. Each player has three skills at his disposal. Two of them are the same for everyone, the third depends on the chosen warlord.

General player skills:

Request Supply: For 3 Essences, you can draw a card from your deck.

Ranged Support: For 2 essences, cause 1 life point loss to a unit or warlord. (maximum 2 times per turn)

That's it in a nutshell for now! In part 2, you'll find out what types of cards there are and how the board is set up! Stay tuned and see you soon!
